This medicine treats people suffering from hayfever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), perennial rhinitis (a similar condition to hayfever, caused by allergies, that continues throughout the year) and urticaria (swelling, redness and itchiness of the skin).
Antihistamines like Zirtek relieve the unpleasant symptoms and discomfort associated with the above conditions, such as sneezing, itchy, runny and blocked up nose, itchy, red and watering eyes and itchy skin rashes.
Most people find that their symptoms start to be relieved within half an hour of taking their tablets with the effect lasting 24 hours.
Adults and children over 12 years :
Take one tablet daily. Each tablet should be swallowed whole with water.
* Not suitable for children under 12 years of age
* If you forget to take a tablet, take another one as soon as you remember, but wait at least 24 hours before taking your next tablet.
* If you accidentally take a larger dose than recommended, consult your doctor immediately.
* You may feel drowsy or dizzy
Drug Interaction Precautions :
You should not use Zirtek if :
* You have a history of allergic reactions to any of its 'Ingredients' listed
* You are pregnant or breast feeding your baby
Do not use more than the recommended dose if you are driving or operating machinery.
As with any other antihistamine, it is advisable that you avoid excessive alcohol consumption when taking these tablets.
If you have ever had a reaction to an antihistamine in the past consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking Zirtek. If your doctor has ever told you that you have kidney problems, you should consult him before taking these tablets.
After taking Zirket Tablets :-
Zirtek tablets do not cause side-effects in most people. However, as with all medicines, some people can react differently.
If you :
- have frequent headaches
- have an upset stomach
- become agitated
- get a dry mouth
- experience dizziness or severe drowsiness
Stop taking the tablets and tell your doctor
If you notice anything unusual or have any other unexpected effects, stop taking the tablets and tell your doctor.
Scientific studies have shown that Zirtek tablets do not normally cause drowsiness. However, individuals can react differently to treatment. If you are affected you should not drive or operate machinery, but should persist with the tablets as any drowsiness is usually transient. If symptoms persist consult your doctor.

Zirek contains 10 mg of Cetirizine Dihydrochloride together with Microcrystalline Cellulose, Lactose, Colloidal Anhydrous Silica, Magnesium Stearate and Opadry Y-1-7000.
Zirtek tablets are small white oblong film-coated tablets, each one scored and bearing the code Y/Y.
The tablets are supplied in blister packs of 7 tablets.
