Sweat rash (candidal intertrigo) and athlete's foot are very common conditions which are caused by a fungus which is found naturally on everybody's skin. Under certain conditions, an overgrowth of the fungus may occur. Candidal sweat rash is characterised by a sore, itchy red rash which is most commonly found in areas where skin rubs together, e.g. below or between the breasts, underarms, tops of legs or the groin, although it can be found on other skin areas. Athlete's foot is characterised by soreness and flaking of the skin between the toes and on the soles of the feet.When not to use Canesten Hydrocortisone - There are a number of circumstances in which you should not use this product :* On areas of broken skin* On large areas of skin* For longer than 7 days* If you have previously had a bad reaction to any of the ingredients in Canesten Hydrocortisone* To treat a cold sore or acne* On your face, eyes, mouth or mucous membrancesCanesten Hydrocortisone should only be used in the following circumstances when prescribed by a doctor :* On children under 10 years* If you are breast-feeding, pregnant or trying for a baby* In the vagina or vulva* On the penis, scrotum or anus* On ringworm* On areas of skin affected by eczema, psoriasis or dermatitisShould I take any special precautions ?As with all medication it is necessary to ensure that you use the product as directed. The following precaustions should also be taken :Apply Canesten Hydrocortisone to the affected area only and avoid contact with the surrounding skinIf your symptoms persist, worsen or keep recurring consult your pharmacist or doctorDo not cover the area being treated with a dressing or tight bandageAs with all products containing hydrocortisone you should always wash your hands after applying the cream.If you forget to use the cream, apply as soon as possible when you remember, then continue the rest of your treatment as directed.Side Effects : As with all medicines, some people may experience side effects with this product such as local irritation or mild burning immediately after applying the cream. If this is intolerable, stop using the cream and tell your doctor. If you experience a rash, swelling or the itching worsens soon after you start using Canesten Hydrocortisone, stop using the cream and tell your doctor immediately, as you may be allergic to this product. If your symptoms get worse or persist or you feel you are reacting badly to this medicine in any other way, consult your doctor.Caution :There are no special precautions that need to be taken but it is advisable to keep this medicine in a cool, dry place, in its outer carton. Do not use the cream after the expiry date. If your pack expires (expiry dates can be found on the end of the tube and pack) please return it to your pharmacist who will safely dispose of it for you.
The cream should be evenly and thinly applied twice daily to the affected part. Do not use for more than seven days. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
Wash the affected area every day in warm, soapy water and dry carefully. Do not rub the skin - dry it by gently patting. If you have athlete's foot, remember to dry the skin between the toes thoroughly. Do not share towels with other people as you could spread the infection to them. Remember to dry affected areas with separate towels to prevent spreading it to other areas of your body. Although the skin will be itchy, try not to scratch it as you could damage the skin further and make the infection spread or harder to clear up. It is important that you wash all clothing that comes into contact with the affected area thoroughly in hot water and change these clothes every day. If you have athlete's foot change your footwear each day if possible. Wash your hands after treating the infection to prevent it spreading.
